How to Identify and Overcome Self-Inflicted Obstacles to Achieve Exceptional Success
Life is a journey filled with challenges, both foreseen and unseen, caused by external or self-inflicted obstacles. In this article, I will share some causes of these obstacles and provide you with strategies I used to overcome them, enabling me to live a more fulfilling, healthy, and productive life.
Causes of Self-Inflicted Obstacles
- Fear: Fear paralyzes. Many hold back because they worry they may fail. The fear of Failure is psychological and affects people in various ways. It’s a complex emotion that affects your self-esteem, motivation, and well-being. Fear can be triggered by competitiveness and comparisons, low self-esteem, doubts, uncertainty, society’s standards of success, harsh criticism from people, lack of financial stability, and more.
- Perfectionism is another common cause of self-inflicted obstacles. While striving for excellence is admirable, demanding perfection in every aspect of life can be paralyzing. Setting unattainable standards leads to chronic stress and dissatisfaction.
- Negativity: Our inner dialogue significantly affects our self-esteem and confidence. Overthinking creates unnecessary internal conflicts, emotional distress, negative self-talk, harsh self-criticism, and self-doubt.
- Procrastination: Procrastination is an expected behavior that often coexists with the fear of failure. It’s a self-defeating habit that opens the door for delay and laziness. It prevents a call to action on important tasks, goals, or responsibilities. Procrastination is like a virus. The antidote is a call to action.
Strategies for Overcoming Self-Inflicted Obstacles
- Pay attention to yourself: Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and re-occurring patterns that trigger your inner conflicts. Journal them. Identifying these elements is the first step to overcoming them.
- Erase Negativity: Replace negative thoughts and words with positive thoughts, words, and actions. For example, replace “I don’t think I can’t do this” with “I can do all things.”
- Set Realistic Goals: Avoid setting unattainable standards by establishing realistic and achievable goals. Compartmentalize them into manageable tasks to increase your chances for success and reduce overwhelming emotions drastically.
- Focus: Staying focused and keeping your eyes on the mark is essential for achieving your goals. Plan, stay disciplined and take breaks when needed. Remember, every step forward counts!
- Consider Yourself: Be kind and compassionate to yourself. When you make a mistake, remind yourself that you are human. No one is perfect; even the most successful individuals have faced setbacks and failures. So, every mistake made is an opportunity for growth and learning.
- Create a Thriving Environment: Surrounding yourself with positive influences that support your goals and well-being is crucial to your success. Remember that the journey to success is a process, and setbacks are part of the learning experience. By embracing these challenges, you transform these obstacles into opportunities for growth and self-discovery.
